Each day I think it would be a good time to do a little academic seat work. Each day I get overwhelmed by all the items I purchased at the used curriculum fare. Not so much that I purchased so much that I can’t get my brain around it, but more that its been scattered in this room, the craft room, my night stand, the hall closet, the computer room and I think I
found a book in the kitchen.
I purchased a years worth of PACE’S from A.C.E.’s School of Tomorrow. I really like what I see in their English PACES. I found the whole year for both Nathan and Jonathan at our Kid’s Store, A used curriculum store. I didn’t purchase each pace for the year, but a year’s worth. 🙂 My goal is to have Nathan ready to write, and practicing writing on his own by Decemberish. I’d like him to be able to have the language mechanics skills to write something to mail, or report, or remember. The language and english PACES seem to be fluid in teaching the sets of skills needed little by little, and then practice them.
Anyways, I went to shopko and got a Flex Folder to put each of his 3 R’s type worksheets in. It has a 3 ring binder of sorts and we put in paper and folders. I put in his miquon math in, and while doing so looked to see what page we are on. He was on a large page of multiplication, he had done 3 problems, drew a picture of snoopy, 3-4 3d objects that I couldn’t figure out, and rubbed a hole through his paper with the end of an eraser in a circle a bit bigger than the tip of the eraser itself. He then drew on cat ears and whiskers and eyes. Very cute. Multiplication, set aside for the creative talents of a little boy. Remind me to scold him later.
Well, I did make it through the 4 piles of books and paces and readers and puzzles yesterday. I went to get a flex folder for Jonathan also. They are sitting at the table practicing their first and last names and phone numbers. It took forever for them to write them at the library yesterday, so I figured a morning of practice was in order.
I also decided to not wait through the summer to "start" school again. Even though we are constantly learning, the main aspect that comes with the idea of school in my mind is structure and schedule. So out came my calendar again. With the lists of menus and to do lists and day time happenings. Yesterday I wrote down my grocery list, and this morning I see that I actually made it out of the store with only these items and for under $20.00. Hmmm Amazing what a little planning will do for me. So I will start to try to be the parent again, and be more in control of how our day is flowing, and what we are accomplishing in these "lazy" summer days. We have made our goal to work out every day, and the boys asked this morning when we will get to go again today. Nate has made his goal of reading every day for a min. of 30 minutes. Jon has made his goal to play and do games and dig every day. 🙂 He will work on new goals of reading as well, he has practiced reading every day.
So, as the chickens scratch on the back porch, the fans are buzzing around the house to get the cool air in, the dishwasher is humming and the bathrooms are waiting to be cleaned, I will sign off for a bit. 🙂
