School in the Summer

We’ve been asked more times than I can remember – "Do you homeschool year round?".   My answer varies with whatever week we are in.  Sometimes a quick yes, or a no, or sometimes.  It is hard to talk about home learning, continual learning, continued education to folks that have only experienced School Textbook type learning.  Learning that is timed, scheduled and is rigid to an environment of scope and sequence, grade level, learning level and appropriate content.   This summer, out of necessity, we have been continuing our reading program while being supported by the public schools.  We have joined Stover Park and Juniper School to read for at least a half hour, eat a free lunch, then read or play with friends for another half hour.  In this time frame (since July?) we have have not missed more than one day per week. In that time, the boys have either read or listened to over a hundred books. In that time frame one son has gone from a K-1 level to a 4-5 level of reading ability.  One son has gone from letter sound recognition, to memorized words and the ability to sound simple words out to read himself a story. He has memorized 3-4 of his favorite books and can "read" them to people, which gives him great pleasure.  Did you know that the King James reading level is around the 4th grade?  True, some words they may not know the meaning of, but they may not know the meaning of words in other translations either, but they will have the Holy Spirit to guide them.  I am so excited and humbled and grateful that the Lord has helped us to be faithful to "school" this summer.
