The Shack Page 109

"They made their way three-quarters up the dock and lay down on their backs looking up. The elevation of this place seemed to magnify the heavens, and Mack reveled in seeing stars in such numbers and clarity. Jesus suggested that they close their eyes for a few minutes, allowing the last effects of dusk to disappear for the night. Mack complied, and when he finally opened his eyes, the sight was so powerful that he experienced vertigo for a few seconds. It almost felt like he was falling up into space, the stars racing toward him as if to embrace him. He lifted his hands imagining that he coudl reach out and pluck diamonds, one by one, off a velvet black sky. ‘Wow!’ he whispered. ‘Incredible!’ whispered Jesus, his head near Mack’s in the darkness. ‘I never get tired of this.’ ‘Even though you created it?’mack asked. ‘I created it as the Word, before the Word became flesh. so even though I created this, I see it now as a human. And I must say, it is impressive!’"

This just made me smile. We lived in a house out on the high desert that had a panoramic view of 7 mountain peaks. What glorious views we had painted in varying color each evening as dusk settled. Then the heavens would open up to sights we had never experienced on the coast at the beach. I recall wondering if I’d ever grow tired of it. So far- in almost 5 years – the answer remains – no.

The passage also made me stop to think of Christ growing up – and seeing the things he created through his own child eyes – through his own boyish discovery – through the flesh. My boys love to discover everything. Yesterday they were picking the back yard apart and passing every speck through a microscope, literally on the porch, to play scientist. Imagine Jesus as an 8 year old – the ultimate scientist – in an 8 year old body. Amazing.
