September’s Geography – South America

We went to the library today to find some evening reading books, books on CD and a theme for our Geography Co-op.  The boys found some fun books, a couple of DVD’s and we chose Inkheart on CD to listen to in the car.  Last year when we studied South America we visited Brazil and the Amazon River.  This year we will head south, to the end of the earth – Tierra Del Fuego, in Argentina, South America.  I found a book titled Red Knot by Nancy Carol Willis – the pictures and maps and vocabulary are inspiring. So inspiring – that it will be the basis for South America this year for the Middle School and the 3rd grade Geography. We checked out Argentina, Enchantment of the World and True Book Argentina as well.  One of my other favorites is Picture Window Books – World Atlas, Atlas of South America. It inspires the boys on how to fill in different line maps based on information like rainfall, population, animals, governments etc.

We will read and map out little Red Knot in her journey to Canada and back throughout a year.  The 6th grader can fill in more detail in a notebook – the 3rd grader can recreate maps and pictures of the shorebirds as we read through. I look forward to seeing what the climate is in this little country on the tip of the earth and seeing what types of foods they eat and their history.  I can say that before this afternoon, I do not recall hearing the name Tierra del Fuego – so as always, Geography remains my favorite subject – there is always more to learn. Second to Science. 🙂
