The Study of Red Knott, a Shore Bird was a great hit with both boys to study South America. As we have studied continents so much for the past 6 years, it is hard to come up with interesting things, especially when our knowledge is limited to a few of the books at the library and cultural /political news. I’d like them to have a feeling for the land, the people, the climates etc.
Our last focus was on Tierra Del Fuego, a tiny island off of the left southernmost tip of South America – this time I was thinking of going to South Africa and came across Eleonora’s Falcon which migrates from the UK to Matagascar. An island off the left side of South Africa. 🙂 This p ast year scientists were able to plant a GPS unit on an Eleonora’s Falcon, and follow it, not up the eastern seaboard as suspected, but across the deserts of Africa diagonally to the UK – Scotland area. As with the Shore Bird, it helped to tie in Canada with the study, and have a path to follow along the way. We studied Scotland last year, so this makes for a great tie in as well.
Here at the lake – we are learning the patterns of the birds wintering over here. We are watching massive amounts of migratory birds in formation journeying above us. Migration happens due to food, climate and people. We will talk more about climates and food chains, something brought to my mind when I was praying about a direction for geography this year.
We will still participate in the Central Oregon Passports Club – via You Tube – from Lincoln City. So far, we have not connected with any homeschoolers here in Lincoln County, Oregon. The library is closed for repairs – so we will need to figure out where they gather . . . . hmmmm. OHEN is having a talk on Tuesday in Newport, so I will journey south to see who shows up. Until then – its YouTube and Geography to pass on with our Middle School journey. 🙂
