Sourdough Experiments

Hubby asked if I could get a sourdough starter going – after reading quite a few blogs – we have been successful!  The first thing we tried to make was sourdough bread bowls, they were ok, but small, didn’t rise very much, and they were pretty dense.

Next we made sourdough pancakes.  Ah-MAZE-ING. Amazing. Did I say Amazing?  Light and fluffy. Tiniest tang. Bubbly as soft. Crisp on the edges. Oh so Yummy.

Homeschool, Bread, SourdoughTonight we tried the bread again – and it didn’t rise again.  I added some yeast, water, oil and extra flour to the recipe and it finally doubled, almost tripled. We had to run in the afternoon to a coffee date with some friends, and then bible study at church, so the loaves ended up on the second rise for almost 6 hours.  Still did fine. Crispy crust, soft sponge middles. Oh Yum. I sprinkled some  cheese on the top before baking.

I’ve read this on several blogs and it is true – amazing to build a loaf of soft airy bread out of flour and water, and occasionally a little boost of yeast. 🙂
