Sticks and Stones ~ Need Water

Remember when the kiddos were tiny and spent hours on the bridge? Left. Right. Back. Forth. Back. Forth. Watching random items float from one side to the other. Then the realization that they could gather some pine cones or leaves to put in the current and race back and forth to watch how fast it could float by the other side.

Well, those little munchkins grow up, learn a bit more about physics and gravity, current, force and weight.

The boys spent an hour gathering logs, rocks, twigs, you name it.  Throw the log over the bridge, then pelt it with rocks. Except – one large log got stuck in the piling underneath. So the object became to figure out how to dislodge it.  We discovered that getting another flat piece of driftwood stuck created  a current that made the first stuck log move.  Pelt it with large stones, and tah dah.

So – it turns out, boy will be boys.  Little boys at heart with bigger bodies and stronger muscles.  We had a great day exploring the Oregon Coast from Lincoln City to just north of Florence today.

We learned about Tent Caterpillars, Cape Perpetua and Sand Dollar Beds.  Great day for spontaneous learning. Too bad we weren’t “Doing School” today.
