Sunset Lake Shots

At sunset, the waters start to team with life.  All of the insect eating birds swarm across the waters, diving and flying in circles, soaring straight up, then diving again.  All evening long, I found maybe 3-4. On the way home close to sunset, there were countless birds, but in that environment – they all look like tiny black darts.  I REALLY want to know what the black and white ones are called – but I have failed to get any identification – other than black, with white underneath feathers, small, flies like a tiny kite, wings are straight triangles that flap open and closed quickly as they dart. Not sure on beak or feet colors, as they look like little black darts.

imageOh for the joy of learning! With the photos taken last night – and a list of birds from  Lincoln City’s Bird Guide I am relatively sure that I have been seeing a combination of Tree Swallows and Barn Swallows. One of the pics below looks like a Barn, and one a Tree. And, as luck would have it – my Handbook of Nature Study Bible Book has 6 pages dedicated to these amazing creatures!  I just can’t tell you how this gives me joy to get the mystery out!

The swarms over the water. Look closely at the little tiny black spots.
