I was in a silly mood yesterday – as I wandered the bookstore in utter bliss, hubby enjoying a day off and the boys enjoying a day of creating things. I alone. . . .wandering – feeling the spines of the book, rubbing their covers, gazing at the print.
It was a small moment – when seeing these three small shelves labeled Homeschooling – that made me giggle – Of why I like to introduce myself as an unschooler, a relaxed learner, an eclectic. It is up to the interpretation of those I speak to what those words even mean. The simple fact that my children are not enrolled in the government public school system is obvious, as they rarely leave my side. The fact that we are neither public or private – but that we school at home is a simple thought. But seeing these three small shelves of used/misused/abandoned curriculum books – just made me giggle. And be thankful – for the mentors that put me on the path of transformation in my thinking of education. I pointed my little phone camera and triumphantly grinned – See!! See World!!! THAT is why we do not Home School!
We learn – we grow – we evolve in our thoughts. We feed the passions of geography and marine life – of writing and geology – of computer programming and digital design – of learning fractions and learning about health.
A friend posted a link to a talk that I just carved out time to take in – I urge you to listen as well. He is not speaking to homeschoolers as I had assumed. He is actually speaking to the very community of people with the power to change / transform revolutionize education – to transform it into something else. Something individual. Something powerful. Something that will help prepare the individuals in the classroom –equip them to enhance their talents and passions.
<<Sit with a cup of tea and 17 spare minutes to feel encouraged and ignited>>
Homeschooling – isn’t what we do – it is who we are. Learning isn’t a valve to be opened and closed – so that our private desires and passions can be pursued outside of the classroom – it is the platform to prepare for those things. Not to prepare for college or a life that they will live somewhere unknowing in the future – but to lead a fulfilling life here – now. To equip the boys to know their environment – their cities, their country – the workers that now give their life to serve them – that some day they might join in the ranks – and their serving will be a carrying out of their passions and talents. That those passions will spark their desire to go to the hard places – do what most are unwilling, go the extra mile. He said in his talk that and hour spent doing what you love can pass by as if five minutes have fluttered – and yet five minutes of mundane unwanted tasks will drone on like an hour.
Does your learning time feel like the fluttering of moments? Or the dragging of hours? Maybe you are in need of a revolution in education –
