When the Lights go Out

We still haven’t heard what caused the 3 bright blue flashes over the lake, with the lights flickering each time, to a – black out. Man –o-man is the lake pitch black!  Just about everyone has a light on their boat house, so we always see twinkle stars and a glow of amber. Last night you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face!

It was good to have our emergency kit ready, the boys all knew where it was located in the house, and only one flashlight had batteries that were used up, and we had spares in the battery drawer.

Nate pulled out the way cool antique card table that came with the house – we set out to play Kings Corners – easy enough to play in the dark.

Then to sit and read a book on Jon’s iPod –The Kindle on the iPod has back lighting. Nice. I had downloaded a free copy of the Easter Story.

(Emergency Box – 4 small gas lamps, 1 bag of tea lights, 4 flashlights, 2 lighters. One bucket of batteries in a separate location, 1 magnetic flashlight and one wind up flashlight. All family members knows where the box is located. If it were a long stint, a battery operated radio might be nice, but our town doesn’t really have local stations. Two of our phones have limited internet and all three have txt so we were in communication with town. We have a battery powered generator that got brought in, just in case, dry wood in the garage ready to go, and bottled water.  Under the house we keep our camp cooking kitchen handy and available if we were in a “long term” no power situation. Oh, and I always have a gas lamp on the fireplace with an extra bottle of oil. I enjoy the soft light in the mornings.)

Note to self – stock a secret hidden emergency box full of Smores Supplies. Winking smile
