Martin Luther King Day – of Prejudice, Passion & Purpose

Have you had that moment with relatives, friends, the retired grocery shopper?  You know the moment – “Pop Quiz Day”. Only its not as fun and exciting as getting picked up in the Quiz Cab where there is the excitement of being on TV and winning a pot of money when you reach your destination.  Its more like an embarrassing stress moment, like in the walking around town in your unders dream, only when you wake up you have a child hiding behind your coat and a loved one (or stranger) convinced that homeschooling is not working. 🙂

We had that moment on Sunday, when the boys found out the there is no school on Monday for Martin Luther King Day.  Nathan, the 11 yr old asks – “Who was Martin Luther King?” I was glad we were in my kitchen, and not the check out line at Bi-Mart.

“I tell you what – If you can research it out, give me the answer in a report, you can skip Math and English on Monday.”  Thinking it would be a glorious day of 10 hours of Roblox, Nathan quickly got to work.

IMG_1636Jon and I went for a walk on the beach Monday morning – a perfect time to chat about subject that need pondering and free uninterrupted questions. We talked about who MLK was, what he meant to a people and our nation, and what he gave his life for.  Jon’s question is “ If he lived would he have made such a huge impact? Would people have remembered his speeches?”.  I’m not sure.  Losing his life, gave a life worth living to so many.

IMG_1635Nathan looked up when the holiday started.  A quick search  in Wikipedia should answer that question, so I won’t go into his report here. What we came up with, is that it took our nation until 2000 to totally recognize, State By State that is a day worthy of holding up for him.  And in the end, Civil Liberty, spurred by a man of passion, rings into our children’s learning.

Which brought up the question in our home.  What are we passionate about? What will we stand up for? What will we March and Wave Flags and Write Speeches about? Jon thought of AWANA.  Marching for The Truth.  We spent the morning making our own home Awana Flags and Banners.

Awana Flag Jon Awana Banner
I looked up 2 Timothy Chapters 1 & 2 and was convicted.  I had laid aside AWANA like a favorite board game.  Something we did when we were Bored, but knew it to be educational and fun when we picked it off the shelf.  We had started playing “AWANA Night” at home on Thursdays, but for me, it was mostly to pass the time that hubby is at work and soothe like salve the hurt of not being able to be with our friends.

Part of 2 Timothy 1:12 says – I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

I felt the stab in my heart  HE IS ABLE – TO KEEP – WHAT I HAVE COMMITTED – Even when I treat the commitment like a shelved board game.  Awana was the only activity that I felt committed to at the beginning of the year. Not necessarily to be a leader, but to participate, knowing the fruit that the labor was likely to produce if we endured. I’ve seen, heard, witnessed the fruit of those who have endured before us.  I know this verse is not speaking of never breaking a commitment to a club, by my heart knows, and the Holy Spirit is a witness to that commitment and surety I had before we moved.  We talked about it as a family – and in one week, the boys have recited almost three sections of their books. God is Faithful. Even when we take breaks!

Homeschool Awana at home

So last night, as with the last 2 Thursdays, Awana Games is our Family Board Game Night, last night we played Cadoo because the boys wanted to play charades.

We worked on verses, reciting them, looking up the passages.

Had brownies for snack, then listened to  a story about China.

And for the Prejudice & Passion – we will stand, March, Write, Speak, Display, Testify to the power of following through with what the Lord says is our path, what the law says is our right, and what the Bible says is instruction.  To teach our children at home, to walk with them and talk with them about the Word, to show them our God as the Creator, Christ as our Savior, and the Holy Spirit as that comforter, always testifying in our heart and to the Lord that we are His. (Romans 8:16)

What are you passionate enough to speak to crowds about?  Are you willing to stand before those who hate you or your message enough to burn your homes or shoot you or your family? To be spat at? Ridiculed? Your reputation tainted?  Are you Marching for the Truth?
