Bringing Math to the Real World – Roblox Style

My boys LOVE Roblox. Well, to say love would be um, maybe the wrong word. Obsessed with? Addicted to?  Roblox is an online community where members can create their own games, design their own characters – all in the theme of Legos – Kinda Like Lego Robot Blocks. 🙂

My oldest son, FunyNate in the game, discovered T-Shirt Creation – then Group Creation.  (He has a group for Homeschoolers.)  He created some Homeschool T-Shirts inspired by Lego Minifigs.  He’s discovered how to earn the online currency of Tix and Robux. His grandpa even sent a new Wacom Tablet to help  with the the graphic design.

This afternoon’s question was how to create advertising for his new skatepark. He can earn Roblox currency for people who click on his ad  – more for people who play/enter his game.

So this took a bit of figuring today – Reading the advertising instructions – Constructing a banner that is 728×90.

Then, the ad runs on an auction fashion, you bid a certain amount of tix, and they put you in a lottery pool for how many times your add will come up with.  Based on their information part of what we discovered is that –

Min Per Day Per 3 Mins Tix for Bid for 24 Hours Estimated Ad Run Per Roblox
1440 480 $50 886
    $75 1329
    $100 1772

We discussed the percentages of times the ad could run depending on how much of the auction he purchased.  He went with 200 tix – just to be sure.

Then to create the ad:

Banner-728-Skate-Park-FunyN

So far, every 3rd to 6th time he clicks on Roblox he sees his banner on top. We are keeping track of percentages to see if maybe tomorrow he will only pay 50 tix. He thinks there are only 12 ads or so on the loop. 🙂 We’ll see if , financially, it will be worth the effort or incentive to run more ads.

For the mom, it has been quite a fun afternoon watching the math, research, design and execution!

OH And If Your child wants to create an account – I have one son on a regular free account, and the older son has a Premium Account so he can sell items.

Both are happy with their choice. If you sign up for an account –  Find FUNYNATE, as we both get Robux for a referral. 🙂 Also, if you just want to friend some fun boys – look up FunyNate, or JonnyLego – they’d love to play with homeschool kids.

Update at 11pm,  the ad has been shown 420 times, clicked on 4 times, no tix earned. He says, “Isn’t that weird?”. I think we put up the ad about 2 and half hours ago.

Update at 3:00 pm – 5,126 Impressions (amount of times they’ve put up the banner); 21 Clicks into his site – He’s earned 15 tix – which is how many times they’ve clicked on the banner and then clicked into his game. Interesting.  We’ll keep ya posted at 24 hrs. 🙂

24 Hour Update – the banner ad runs for 24 hours – he had been telling me he had a 40% CTR (Click through Ratio) but had only earned about 15 tickets (Tix), I spent the greater part of the evening trying to find out why? And then, Why would you advertise if it offered you little to nothing in return if you had a 40% CTR on 6,000 impressions?

Well, little lesson in Ratios and Decimals.  It ended up being POINT .37% CTR on almost 7,300 impressions.  Big difference of .37 and 37.  Glad to have a project that can show these little mistakes in real life.

Activity Expected Real Outcome
Impressions approx 3,000 7,298
CTR   27
Monies   27

We are working on creating a t-shirt for the VIP area of his Ramp’inly Awesome Skate Park – however, we’ve tried working on the VIP door two times and have not figured the scripting right.  We watched a few YouTube videos on VIP T-Shirt Doors, and will try again today.

How have you turned what your boys are doing in real life to show how math is a part of all that they do?

Oh, and BTW, my son was THRILLED with the comment below!  Any Roblox Addicts out there who would have time to comment would really encourage his scripting adventure in Roblox Studio.

  1. I’ve done my own experiments – I think the best way to make money with ads is actually to advertise items instead of places. You have a lower conversion rate, but your profit margin is much bigger. On some accounts I’ve been able to realize 700-800% returns on my ad-buy investment.
