Education Service District

Testing for grade levels 3, 5, 8, and 10 shall occur in the third, fifth, eighth, and tenth year ending August 15. The first year is defined as when the child is seven on September 1, or earlier at the parent’s discretion.

If the composite test score of the child places the child below the 15th percentile based on national norms, the child shall be given an additional examination within one year of when the first examination was administered.

We are overwhelmingly thankful that we have the option to raise up our boys in the way that we feel led from the Lord.  – The responsibility of that choice can be overwhelming – but we take it day by day. Needs change, resources change, co-op and classes change, and so do we.  We take a relaxed approach, but a disciplined approach to be accountable for our time throughout the day.

Both of my boy’s birthdays fall after September, so their YEAR of learning is different than their peers GRADE LEVEL of learning.  It has been the most difficult for the boys to understand.  Nathan was SEVEN in SEPTEMBER, and now was ELEVEN in September so this is his FIFTH year of learning according to the ESD, so he will need to take his testing before August of this year for the Fifth Year level. However, he is now 12 and is as tall as a 14-15 year old, and doing 7-8th grade work in Math, 6th grade level English and college level science. We categorize him as a 6th grader for church and gatherings where it is important to be peer level.  Jonathan was 7 in September when he started, and this year was 8 in September, so this is his SECOND year of learning, but he is now 9 and we place him with the THIRD GRADERS in church and peer groups.  He is doing 4th grade math, college level science, standard geography and art, and 3-4th grade level English.

We teach the boys each according to their interest and skill level, urging to better their best each time, ask more questions, observe more detail. I am glad that I am not in a classroom of 40 children where my answer might be – you’ll get to that next year, or in a couple of years.  For the most part, apart from math, writing, and reading, they do everything at the same level. I am not sure how much detail Jonathan will remember, I did realize this year he does not remember cloud levels, so we will work on that a bit more, or tree identification, but I do not fret, as for most of my readers, are you able to look outside and tell me what clouds you see in their proper levels?  There is time to have these conversations until it is a part of his conversational vocabulary. 🙂

I have one child with learning disabilities, and this system has saved him in the early years, where we had time for him to grow, mature, and get to a level if not advanced state. Had the evaluating come earlier, I’m sure he would have had a list of labels, and now, he is learning differently, not learning dis-abled. The years gave me ample opportunity to study, learn and adjust to his needs as well.

Thank you for sharing. We looked at Oregon when we thought we would have to move there. Reading the State requirements now from two different parents living there, it doesn’t sound as bad as my research made it seem. I am however glad we didn’t move.

It’s wonderful to go with your convictions without feeling pressure:) It seems like some basic good requirements.
