The World’s Shortest River, Just got a little shorter!

D River, in Lincoln City, Oregon has the claim of being the World’s Shortest River – However – Today – it’s just a bit shorter!

This Morning – We noticed that the lake had risen to be above our dock, which usually only happens after days of pouring down rain.  We’ve had a huge weather system come through, but mostly wind and hail – not alot of rain.  We were just talking about water and gravity, and distribution and the D River – and how it all equals out – helping us not to flood.

Ya. Riiiiiieeeeght.

Well – I pulled around and we went back to take a look – and they were right!

The river was gone!

There was an expert out there taking measurements and such when we walked through the dry sandy river bed, that is usually a rock bed, and he said this is the 3rd time this year that the ocean has had such a huge storm that it has shoved so much sand up that it has blocked the flow of the river.  We could see where the river was slowly pushing its way westward, and by the time we left an hour or so later – we could see where the high tide was likely to reach that mark – but for a while – no river.  VERY STRANGE in deed! Here are some photos of our walk –

The river started flowing bit by bit each day after this post – and it is flowing to the ocean today. However, it is still pretty shallow. Our water in the lake is still just below the dock, and on a "normal" day, it is 6-8 inches below.

  2. That is amazing! I am preparing a journal for a Flat Stanley project, and I was just reading about this river online! Lord bless you!Sarah
