Another day in the life –

Played to the music of Fraz Schubert – which is playing in our car – since it is a challenge to learn his music this month in the outdoor nature challenge, spring.

We headed up the western cascades  to do a little shooting for the Hunter Education Class – I’m not sure what this hill did to anyone, but apparently it needs to be shot at several times – with several weapons.

We passed this covered bridge on the way up the mountain –so of course – on the way back we stop for a while, have some good discussion!

After a walk along this beautiful creek by the bridge – we come home to enjoy near 70 weather – with a BBQ – and then head to the Connie Hansen Flower Garden for a looksee with some out of town friends. On they way home the thermometer did read 70. 🙂 The flower garden is my favorite part of the day – so you get to scroll through these photos full size.

Nate spotted this persistent bacon winner in the parking lot – we were wondering if he went hunting for this guy, or if he had fallen off a windshield. . . . .

We only took two shots of this guy – but noticed when we got home that we got the hair on the fly’s um, rump. 🙂

After we left the flower garden we went to the beach, Nate has float fever, walked most of Lincoln City today – had a great time, but came home with empty pockets, save a few agates. 🙂

Oh – and at lunch – when we came home – we did the whole mom goes crazy cause the house is entirely trashed due to the going going going of the week. Nature studies are fun –but they leave little room for floor sweeping . . . . . Worth it though. 🙂

I’m fairly new to your blog, came across it searching for semi-local homeschooling resources (we’re in Tillamook county). I just wanted to say that your blog has me more motivated than ever to incorporate nature study into our everyday life, and also to relax my homeschooling expectations. We don’t NEED to cover a sit-down lesson in every subject, every day. 20 years from now we won’t regret missing sit-down lessons; we will regret not spending more quality time together as a family.

Sounds like a lovely, lovely day. We’ve done the hunter ed thing with our youngest, who adored it. I kept thinking the same thing about the poor hill they used too!!

Jon and Nate have been shooting since they were about 5-6. Central Oregon had/has a great kids program, their annual event is May 29th where the kids get to shoot every weapon – in an insanely professional and fun manner. They started out with Chipmunk 22 guns. Tiny little things. Jon is mad cause he isn’t taking the hunter safety class, but seriously, I can’t picture him in class for 3 hours . . . Or wandering around in the woods with a loaded hunting gun . . . . 🙂

  4. H asks me every other day how old he has to be in order to hunt. He’s 6. I think we need to move further in the country where people won’t be shocked that we are going to teach them about guns. We’ve already started, in fact. Wow, so much in common, it is kinda crazy. lol

I must say you’ve really inspired me. We’re getting back outside again too. I love to watch you guys unschool and am inspired. We’ll be sharing about our lichen studies as soon as I can get my photo upload working again.

    Miss you!

We have been working with Barb at Handbook of Nature Study to incorporate a bit more substance to our observations and writing. She is the one that assigned us the Schubert music and an impressionist painting this month. The boys liked the music. 🙂 I want to write more poems with the boys – I love your little guy’s writing. . . . Hard to fit it all in . . . .
