Girls Who Looked Under Rocks Book Review

Girls Who Looked Under Rocks, Jeannine Atkins

I saw this title at the Oregon Aquarium last month and texted myself to remember to look it up at the library – What a treasure this book is! Being “Pebblekeeper” I was instantly drawn to the book and then excited to see some of my favorite girls inside – Jane Goodall, Anna Botsford Comstock, Maria Sibylla Merian, Fances Hamerstrom, Rachel Carson and Miriam Rothschild.

The book talks of how they started as pioneer naturalists. so very encouraging as a woman to keep looking  – keep sketching – keep pursing this passion – an ongoing education!

Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv

All I can say is – READ IT! I’ve typed, re-typed, browsed blogs, thought and pondered, and I just can’t seem to put into words how amazing this book is for our times.

He puts into words how the out doors, green trees, sunshine, nature – helps us to focus, reflect, heal. Of how to switch our brains from the attention that is led by others, (internet, tv, teachers, parents) to a mind that can be free to dream and think and discover and heal. Hard for my pea brain to explain – so I’ll go back to my original word – READ IT!

This review has bullet lists of points, but his style of talking you through them with real life examples and testamonies is what is lacking in a mere list – The List

I’ve heard many good things about Girls… I’ll be certain to check it out!

One of the biggest things that stood out for me after reading Last Child… is that when at parks, etc. the kids are always drawn to the ‘natural spaces’ – my 2 seldom play on the structures that are built for them at public parks but prefer the open spaces with trees, shrubs, rocks, etc.

I so wanted to read the Last Child book. After listening to Andrew Pudewa on Nature Deficit Disorder I have been wanting to get out so much more (it helps that it’s not frozen outside anymore). Thanks for the recommendations. 🙂

  3. This is just too funny, I just blogged about trying to be a good role model for my boys, to show them girls can do anything. =) I love these pioneering women too. You might love a book called “Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galapogos Islands” by Margret Whittmer, it’s an amazing story. As you know, I also love “Last Child in the Woods.” I’d love to have tea with you sometime and talk books and hsing.

We were in your neck of the woods today, hubby goes to the VA in Salem, then the boys wanted to see Toys R Us. They’ve never been. We now have a car full of Nerf Guns. 😉 Its beautiful over there, the trees are much further along in the valley. Anytime ya get a hankering for the beach come on over. 🙂
