Word Bank Poetry

Words.  Logos. Letters. Vocabulary. Phrases. Terminology. Expressions.  I love them.  Sweet. Direct. Subtle. Truth. Fantasy.

I read about a word challenge

                  – which I gave to the boys today.

  • To go through a magazine,
  • cutting out words that interest you,
  • that have no threaded meaning,
  • just cut them out.

Then, paste the words together.  In no particular order.  No worries on meaning. Or if the words should go together. Just paste as you cut them out, or picking them up from a pile at random.

I promised the boys that I would not type out their word bank poems on the internet – but that I would share mine.  They allowed me to photograph theirs though.

Jon went crazy cutting out words he recognized. He started all cute with little scissors – then moved on to cutting them out with a knife. He liked connecting small words to photographs.  He’s 9.

Nathan went with thoughts and phrases.  He created two word bank pictures.  Even when our time frame of 30 minutes was done – he went on for an additional 30 minutes, adding his own words to string them together. Intent on telling me what they meant.  That it’s funny. I’ll show one here – He’s 12.

The ongoing challenge is to keep a word bank going in our journal books. Written, cut out, made up.  When we hear or read a word. When we see an object to make a list of words.  I love words. 🙂

My list –

Neglected, rediscovered, spirited, passion

It allows plenty of time for additional meandering.

Possible, to hold all the, salt sprayed, seasons.

Worth the challenges, speedbumps,  better.

Growing, Crazy, Pleasure, Grow along the shore.

Vision.

Floxglove – Because they’re resistant to wind and salt air, these spires of bell-shape flowers work well in coastal areas.

I put in the whole last statement because I’ve been watching a plant grow in the flower garden, and I havn’t been sure if it was a flower or a weed – watching it grow.

Guess it stays. 🙂

I am IN LOVE with this word challenge…and cutting the words out with a hunting knife makes it that much cooler!

(I was going to try to be witty and make my blog comment some random words thrown together, but then you might think I was just a tad crazy…which I am…but I don’t need to make that kind of 1st impression…especially to a crew mate that I could get some good ideas from…) :0)
