October TermMESA
We will be visitingGrand Mesa, Colorado |
In our Geography Terms Tour – our goals are –
- Able to give a description – explain by Verbal, Sketch and Mold,
- Name an outstanding example,
- Find the example on the map and learn how the geographical shape is formed.
This month we will be talking about Mesa formations – and heading to the Grand Mesa, Colorado, North America
We will
- Look for ways the Mesa’s have been known to form historically.
- Compare Mesa with Plateau
- Create a 3D project of Mesa and Plateau
- Write out descriptions to add to lapbook
- Check out library books on the Grand Mesa, Colorado area
- Create Lapbook Page
We will
- look to see how large the Grand Mesa is – try to compare it to a known object – Wikipedia Information on Grand Mesa Link
- look through photographs on line of the Grand Mesa ad Plateau Valley area – Link to Colorado Graphics
- discuss the regions of the United States (Page 163 Ultimate Geography)
- map out the regions on blank USA maps – fill in major rivers and mountain ranges, (page 163, 160, 231, 235 Ultimate Geography) (Enchanted Learning Maps)
- play “10 Days in the USA” a few times this month.
Before studying these out – I could not explain the difference between a Mesa and a Plateau. The other geographic term used often is Butte. Moving from Central Oregon, we have see many Buttes – but we will discuss this in the comparisons as well. One fact I read is that Plateaus make up 1/3 of the earth’s land – and they occur on every continent.
What great Mesa or Plateau are formed in the country/continent you are studying this month?
Thanks for coming back to comment and post links to your geography studies for the month of October. They really inspire me!

Angie – Do you have a post describing the Geography Terms tour in general? I mean one from the start of the year? I wanted to refer to it in my posts so others interested in joining could come here to learn more.
