Fall Apple Time!

Handbook of Nature Study – Autumn – Apples

This box of Gala Apples was delivered last Friday from the Davis Orchards in the beautiful Walla Walla Valley. I asked my friend if anyone would mind swapping me out another flavor so we could work on our Apple Comparisons and she had a Golden Delicious that another buyer wanted swapped out for a Gala. Perfect.

First – These Gala Apples are the best apples I remember ever eating – ever. So crisp, juicy and sweet. The tiniest hint of tart, that is swamped over by the juice of sweet. The link to their website says they ship out apples – and oh my – these arrived so fresh!

Today we got a chance to sit down, enjoy some apples, cut them in different ways, taste, test, draw and paint. We discovered that we did prefer the Gala to the Golden. I don’t think I could describe how Crispy the Golden Delicious was. Snapped, Loud, Crisp. Tart, yet sweet. Not as sweet as the Gala. Seeds were the same, skin was the same, the texture of the Gala was crisp – until compared to the Golden, then it tasted almost soft.  Crazy!

We also took the time to compare some art mediums. Oil Pastels, Water Color Pencils, Watercolor Pallets and water color crayons. We each liked different mediums.

Our English assignment today was to start learning the what and how of Alliterations. The goal is to write 10 alliterations in sentences with at least 8 words with 5 words having the same starting sound.  We started with Apples and a Thesaurus. The thesaurus was hard, so we opened two dictionaries, and Nate thumbed through them. He quickly came up with three long sentences. Yeah! “An Apple is Always An Awesome Appetizer At An Aquarium In April.”

We had a fun time working in the notebook page from the Autumn Handbook of Nature Apple Study.  Oh! I think the funnest comparisons came from Cutting the Apple. Wedge, Middle, or Top to Bottom.  Fun! Join the fun over at Handbook of Nature Study!

We have become apple snobs around here…since we have three orchards in our small town we have had the opportunity to try many different varieties. My fave is the Fuji ~ it’s almost always crisp {I don’t like mushy apples}, and my kiddos love Jonathan apples 🙂

We are really enjoying the Autumn Series of Challenges, I am so thankful to Barb for her nature challenges!

Jonathan’s are my favorite by taste and by heart. A family friend Grandmother grew them in her back yard. I remember waiting eagerly for when she said we could pick them. The anticipation was horrible, but the wait was worth it! She passed this year, so they go even farther up the list of memory favorites!

  2. I have taken to eating Gala apples in the last few years because of the juicy sweetness. The ones we have locally are all so big though and I always feel guilty not being able to eat the whole thing. I found a solution…our dog loves apples and she is happy to finish the rest whenever I can’t. 🙂

I love that you included the art aspect into your study. I think drawing something, especially in color, really helps sharpen your awareness of color, shape, and size. I should have thought to include that in the challenge….next time maybe.

Apples are an appetizing aspect of any awesome autumn adventure. Amen.
