First Storm of the Season

DSCN7038

The boys let me get them all outfitted so I could take some wave pictures. By tomorrow we are supposed to be at 30 foot waves, 60 mph sustained winds. Oooo-Eeee-Mama. So – today, while it is still gearing up -  We found a few places that seemed safe enough for a quick shot.

DSCN7019 I love little boys in rain coats. 🙂 And now, Even tall boys in Rain Coats.

Even Cute Mama’s in New Rain Gear!  I got these so I could kayak and not freeze when I splashed myself with the oars. However, they come in handy for storm watching too.  The waves and wind are too crazy to do any actual beach walking today – just the quick shots.

We needed a Thesaurus for Nathan’s The Write Foundation  course Sentences to Paragraphs – so, sacrificial mom that I am – we ventured into Robert’s Books.

We got an Oxford Thesaurus, a reading Bible for Jon and a couple of Garfield’s for Nate.
Then, off to Taft to see what there was to see. The tide is Winter High, all the way to the grass in alot of places, all the way to the rip rap wall along Mo’s.

We walked down the road and then took a couple of shots of the surf tossing the huge driftwood around. We saw a lady get hit by a wave from behind – she wasn’t watching, she was looking for items in the high tide mark.  Gotta keep BOTH eyes, and an extra set of eyes on the water. This is no time to have your head down! Always a great warning for the Boys to keep off the driftwood too!

Lots of Pelicans. I really wanted a closer shot. I really wanted to keep my limbs out of the water. . . . so this is what ya get. :)
The following is a public service announcement – Stay Off the Driftwood!

DSCN7051These pieces were several feet away from the surf, but every few minutes, a sneaker wave would come up an engulf them, moving them about. The water surrounding the sawed off log – is the back wash from the Siletz Bay. Every few minutes the bay would backwash onto this part of the beach. It is this back wash that got the Lady. She was many yards away from the actual surf.

DSCN7055The mouth of the Siletz River resembled an Angry Marina Bar like that of the Charleston Bar near Coos Bay today. It is supposed to be MUCH worse tomorrow. This is shot from the road. The bay is really swollen.

Again – if you weren’t paying attention, like the couple we saw that got soaked near this stump – you’d not see that the water line on the bottom right hand side of the photo. Gotta keep your eyes open and wonder why the water line is up there. 🙂

Nothing like waving to Coast Guard Helicopters and Crazy Tourists to build an appetite for Eleanor’s at Taft!

The boys played some pool, basketball, and random games, ate some yummy treats – and then walked on the board walk to talk to the crabbers. The water is REALLY high, and going to be higher tomorrow. Have I mentioned the Storm?  Fun.

Maybe – Tomorrow – From the Car – I’ll show you some 30 foot swells. 🙂

Great photos! How wonderful to have the water right out your back door.

I got a Coleman brand set at the company where hubby works. One of the perks of retail living is the discounts from the stores. 🙂 This is a very lightweight set – not for the black berry bushes for sure. I wanted something quick to pull on for kayaking. Nate’s is Darren’s old Grundens Gear from his commercial fishing days http://www.grundens.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=27
Too heavy and. Heavy for me. 🙂 Mine has vents. Jon asked why – I said so I wouldn’t be so hot. His reply? Oh Mom. There’s nothing you can do to loose your hotness. You’re a hotty. Hmmm. Maybe time to cut down on some of the afternoon tv. 🙂

  3. Wow, look at that ocean! We almost came your way for our anniversary but decided to avoid the wind and go to Silver Falls. I love the coast during a storm. Our first anniversary we spent at the coast and watched a storm through the big picture window.

I also need rain gear. The boys are going out mushroom picking without me because I do not have rain gear. I’m seriously thinking of returning my Kindle (if I can) so I can buy raingear!

    What kind did you get?
