Great Agate Finds at the Beach

The storms took a little a little break today – and so did we! Hubby had the afternoon off so we took the time to go look for agates in some beds that have been uncovered at the mouth of the Siletz River.

On a normal beach day – an agate walker, when at the mouth, sees straight across to the Salishan side  – however, today, the beach was so far out at low tide, the sands shifted – enough to see past Gleneden Beach and out to the points on the way to Depoe Bay. Beautiful Pink and Blue swaths painted over the skies.

Walking through fresh gravel beds – filled with so many colors, shapes and sizes, that one feels the expanse of wealth, and privilege, to have such a shore open to the public, and us – able to walk them at will. To continue to have areas that our shoe prints are the first in an area on the beach – breath taking.

Jon had a nice collection of agates – I found quite a few petrified pieces an different shells. We all added quite a few blue, green, white and clear sea glass to our jar as well.

My big find of the day – and I do mean big – was a  carnelian agate. I found it right at the tip, just at the wave break – it was rolling back and forth. while it was wet, it was a bright pinkish red, when it dried, the edges turned white and dark red. Fingernail markings are all over it. I’m mindful of whacking it with a rock hammer, but I think I’ll show some restraint and bring it to the rock cutter to take a smooth slice from it. It is heavy, and larger than my hand. My favorite find so far on the beach!

wow, you have great pics. I am so glad you came to visit Kingdom Arrows. My readership does not really share my enthusiasim about the outdoor challenges, so I hope to find some likeminded bloggers! You have gorgeous pics!

Many of the Blog Owners on the OHC McLinky spend time going to each other’s blogs – it is really encouraging to me to know there are others who hold Nature Study as important and valuable and not see it as just time wasted outside. . . 🙂 Visit some of the other OHC McLinky’s and the blogs on them, and you will build a community – and they might encourage your readers to spend some time outside. 🙂

Okay, now your comments on my blog are making more sense! LOl
I am sooo jealous! And so is my 7 yr. old guy. I just spend the last 5 minutes looking up the word agate (sorry to say I didn’t know what it meant), & carnelian photos on google. My son was quite impressed with the beautiful stones.

  3. I have to ask…just cause I’m curious. 🙂

Do you have those nifty rock scooper contraptions I have seen the hard-core agate hunters with where they duct tape a slotted spoon onto the end of a broom handle so they can scoop up rocks and sand more easily? I pretty much envy those people with the scoopers because my back hurts when we go agate hunting.

I couldn’t find an image online but they are sort of like a crude version of this:

I could use with some beach time. 🙂 Really liked seeing your treasures.

That is so cool! My daughter, the rock lover, would be so envious! All the pictures of your beach treasures are making me long to visit the shore once again. We just retrieved some of our storage items last time we were in Ohio and I found our own jar of shells and my daughters beach glass collection. Some of our favorite possessions. 🙂
