If I said the word Genesis, what would you say?
Have you read the book of Genesis?
These are the main questions asked to dozens of folks throughout the Roadmap Genesis movie. Was able to watch a preview of the movie in my home. I wasn’t really excited about it – to tell the truth. One more film about Genesis, Creation, Moses, Abraham, Joseph – etc. Bla bla bla. Creation. I get it. Doesn’t everyone? Well. No. They don’t.
Filmmaker Nolan Lebovitz believes that everyone, no matter what your belief system, should at least read the book. And it got me to thinking. When you, (assuming you are a Christian or have been around them) were first introduced to God or Christianity, what book do you think most are encouraged to read first? My answer would be John. But I think Nolan Lebovitz would encourage Genesis, and he has changed my mind to that too.
He interviews scores of folks – too many to name, some listed in the film summary at the end – and I really enjoyed their take on Genesis and how it helped to form our country. Starting with this famous line, “. . . endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights . . .”
“If you don’t study Genesis, then you won’t understand the underpinnings of our country, what our society has been built upon – Conception of family, day of rest, weekends, exile, birth, rebirth – sin – God –” Quickly typed quote from Rabbi David Wolpe, Sinai Temple
I think we can agree that most will willfully worship God’s Creation, but not recognize God as creator. (another line that stuck with me.)
When I was in my mid 20’s, I was in an inductive bible study group. We choose Genesis. Well, they chose it. I begrudgingly went along with it. I thought I knew the stories. I thought I knew the book. This was the first time that I actually picked up the book and read it word for word, assuming nothing from the stories, with a fresh mind, soaking it in. I learned that I had quite a few wrong beliefs. If I hold to my Christian Church and School upbrining – so many other sources must have filtered in. And I can’t blame all of the sweet volunteer Sunday School teachers trying to explain amazing stories in the 15 minutes between the craft, game and snack time. You – Go – Read it.
We were challenged to make a short video sharing our favorite verse. I’m home alone, and I have a new phone that I haven’t quite figured out – but I’ll share my take. I did find out I can upload to Google Drive – and Google Drive will let me upload to picmonkey. Ohhhh Very exciting day today. (Pause for technical difficulties) Well – I’m back – I posted the video to Google +. I need to change the settings on my phone. (I need to have my son do it when he get’s home.) Roadmap Genesis Video Challenge – What is your favorite verse?
From the Publishers:
Roadmap Genesis is a film documentary that makes the case that the Book of Genesis is a roadmap containing guideposts on how to live a productive, fruitful, and fulfilling life that will help our society lift itself out of its current decline and return it to prosperity, promise, and accomplishment.
When Filmmaker Nolan Lebovitz. found himself at a crossroads in his life, he knew he had to choose between continuing to make the Hollywood suspense thrillers that were his livelihood and trying to make the world a better place for his new young family. After much struggle, he found his answer in the Book of Genesis.
He decided to combine his love of the Book of Genesis with his passion for filmmaking and set out to travel the United States, interviewing clergy and public figures in order to build an undeniable argument about the continued importance of the Book of Genesis as guiding force in our Judeo-Christian country.
Roadmap Genesis invites Americans of all faiths to engage in a dialogue about the relevance of the Bible in the modern age. Through interviews ranging from Gov. Mike Huckabee of Fox News Channel to Rabbi David Wolpe, from Alan Dershowitz to the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George, from Erick Stakelbeck of the Christian Broadcasting Network to Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, and many, many more, Nolan explores the rules that God has set forth to help us maintain a successful and working society.
