Is Homeschooling a Valid Alternative to Public School?

This weekend I got to spend some time with the makers of the film, Class Dismissed, a film about learning outside of the classroom. They were the key note speakers at the Oregon Home Education Network Convention.

Which, thinking about it – was a bit strange. A film follows an ordinary American Family as the home educate their children. We get to see them as they enroll in one of the best schools in California, and again when they decide to pull them out. Follow them as they discover what is best for their family, and what reaction to their choices are by family. Ultimately, the come to discover that it is not just an educational choice, but a lifestyle choice. The ‘strange’ part – is that they were talking to a room full of families who have lived this movie out in their own lives this past year, if not for many years, over 10, like myself.

You Can Be A Part –
They are looking for homeschoolers
to fill out a very quick survey:

It was refreshing to see our story played out on the big screen. To hear the myths spoken out by street recordings of impromptu interviews. The truths of home learning – and what does this look like, not in 1985, but in 2014.

From the Website:
There are many choices when it comes to teaching our children, and Class Dismissed will ask some big questions:

  • What is education?
  • Is it possible to get a great education without attending school?
  • What happens to children who never go to traditional school?
  • Can homeschooling really provide a nurturing and educationally rich ground for children to grow and blossom?
  • Can schools be reformed and if so what might that look like?

Class Dismissed will challenge its viewers to take a fresh look at what it means to be educated, and offer up a radical new way of thinking about the process of education.

I am excited for this project. Passionate hours have gone into the making of this film that will be released in Fall of 2014. I think this will be a great film for homeschoolers to watch and identify with. I think this will be a great film for those who are interested in alternative educational choices for their kids. If you are a public/private school mom, and spend any part of your day complaining about school – know that there can be another way.
