Geography Terms Tour – Cliffs – World’s Largest – Trango Towers, Pakistan
We started by creating cliffs out of clay. Then, since this is our first geography lesson of the year – we did the yearly drawing of what we thought the World looked like. The boys both have the concept of the continents and their shapes. It is done more as a quick sketch than an art project. This is the first year that they gave reason and pointed to shapes and gave them names. I was excited! Here is a picture of their cliffs before our study.
Then we went to the living room and looked up Pakistan in the Illustrated Atlas of the World, then moved to our new globe to point it out there. Nathan thought it was funny that “I-Ran to Pakistan – Through Afghanistan”. I think we will remember its location this way. I pulled up our website on the TV computer and went through the activities posted there.
After watching the YouTube video of the Trango Towers – the boys went back and re molded their towers out of play dough. Their favorite fact was that the free fall measured 38.800 feet. Impressive! They blended the colors to make a more purple rock color:
We looked up several passages about God forming the mountains – and of His Strength –
Psalm 95:1-7
1Oh come, let us sing to the LORD;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3For the LORD is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
5The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.6Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
7For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.

We put together the lapbook page – CLIFFS.
We looked up Glacier and Cliff and wrote out the definitions. The flag and the Cliff are flip books.
After we saw the free fall jumps, the boys wanted to go to the skate park and film a free fall sort of thing to make it look like tower, but when we got there, we found a group of Skaters from Los Angeles – traveling to the best known skate parks – and our local park fit the bill. We had fun watching them free soar – and fall a bit – and had a great time.

These guys are about 20 feet in the air at least.
In the pic below, his arm span is at least 5 feet – He’s Really High!

We make a page or two for each country that we visit and tape them in our lapbooks. I haven’t been very good at completing their lapbooks this year, as we have gone back and forth from notebooking to lapbooking. Each boy has their own style, and their own items that they want to save to remember. We have had these going since 2004 – it is fun to look through and see where we’ve been, and have the boys remember!
