Create Better Writers – says that it is targeted to homeschool teachers who do not enjoy teaching writing, and to students who do not enjoy writing time. It is targeted to those who have not focused on writing skills.
We were able to review the Create Better Writers for free as a part of our experience on the Schoolhouse Review Crew. I asked to be able to see these guides as an answer to specific prayer to meet the goals for my son this year.
We have been attending circle type meetings to listen to Homeschool College Students and Grads discuss their “what we wish we would have done” or “#1 thing I’m glad we did” in High School leading up to college. The number one thing we have heard is – develop the ability to read a document quickly or listen to a class – and write a one page essay. For those students who could do this quickly – their classes were not a burden. For those who didn’t, they spent their freshman year quickly learning the ropes.
In our classroom, we have started this idea – read or listen – and then write it down. It is a part of our Narration time. The boys have been practicing this orally since the beginning. Growing from sentences in our lapbooks, to paragraphs in our journal pages, to full sheets in our notebooks – I can see the progression and am glad we took this advice in our early years.
This product gives a reluctant writer and parent the tools they need to focus on a topic. To be able to pull out the main point, or main thought, and build the writing from that point.
In our Charlotte Mason eclectic home – we like to take the opportunity to practice these written narration skills in every subject that we study – Science, History, Geography, Nature, Art – I have found that incorporating their writing practice while engaged in an interesting topic is the easiest way for my boys. If we sit down and have ‘writing time’, it does not come naturally – easily – and will be centered on topics that no one enjoys reading after the writing is finished.
I have read through the e-books that were given to me, and have printed out quite a few of the pages to direct my thoughts while helping them during their narration times. We do practice the ‘secret tip’ on how to write a great paragraph. I am looking forward to this year, our 9th grade year, encouraging my son to stretch from the one or two paragraph replies, to the full page. I believe that the tools in this program will help us both!
Here’s what I received:

How To Teach the Paragraph
Writing instruction does NOT need to be difficult. If your student can write a paragraph, your student can write anything from an essay, to a research report, to an in-depth story.
It all starts with one simple trick. Teach this trick in minutes, have your child practice it several times, and your child will have a solid grasp of how to write paragraphs. Use this trick to write stories, summarize stories, write reports, and more. No assignment is too difficult.
You’ll be amazed at how quickly even reluctant learners can grasp this concept. Recommended Grade: Grades 3 and Up.

If you can’t find the sample on the website, click through to the other reviews, quite a few of the reviewers put up sample pages. I almost did – sorry that I didn’t! We had a pretty full writing curriculum for the last two years for our 7th and 8th grade – many people didn’t like it because it was pretty intense. I LOVE writing – go figure – and narrating, so I loved going through the program with my sons. This program would really bring it down to the bare bones of helping a child focus on getting it written down.
Angie, are there samples on their website? And I was wondering, what has been your favorite “teach your kids to write” curriculum so far? Thanks!
