Along with the DVD review earlier this week – I’ll be giving away the following as well —
Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to turn an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town….and to purse lofty and outdated theories on love and romance. But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can’t help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love. They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an “old fashioned” courtship?
Contrary to popular opinion, being “old fashioned” doesn’t mean you’re dull or unromantic. In fact, a true old fashioned relationship can be more exciting and romantic than anything you’ve ever experienced! So what does it mean to do things the old fashioned way? Sure, it means opening doors, holding out chairs, and taking things slow. But a true old fashioned romance goes much, much deeper than that. Inspired by the motion picture Old Fashioned, this book will show you how to reclaim the lost art of romance by introducing you to romantic love as God intended it. Regardless of your past mistakes, where you’ve been, what you’ve done, or where you are now, you can find and create a love that will last a lifetime! As you work your way through this forty-day journey of inspiring readings and questions for reflection, you’ll discover all the unique and amazing benefits of doing things the old fashioned way. And before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to creating a love story for the ages.
The above wording is from the publisher – As you probably guessed I was a bit conflicted with the movie. I think it was due to my expectations. I have one son who is 17, never wanted a girl friend, goes to dances in groups with friends, and has no desire to become intimately involved – emotionally or physically – with a girl until he is at a place where he knows it will lead to a long term relationship. Since his next two years will be all about travel – he’s ready to wait it out. His choice.
I have another son that is in the thick of middle school, girls, sport communities, crushes, parties, and more girls. All of his friends are dating, or want to be dating. He is on the cusp of it himself, showing particular interest in one of his ‘crushes’.
The journal above says that it is “Reclaiming the Lost Art of Romance – The Old Fashioned Way.” It is written by Ginger Kolbaba, based on the screenplay by Rik Swartzwelder. I did enjoy this simple journal. A 40 day journey through purity, boundaries, modesty, respect and chastity. Each day is a simple quick easy to read devotion of sorts with a verse and a few think about it/journal about it questions. She was in her thirties when she married, as a virgin – so she does write from the – I did it, you can do it to – stand point.
My expectations – was that this would be a helpful book to my teen aged sons – I’m not sure that it is. I think it is more suited to the 20, 30 something crowd, in the thick of – go out on a date – maybe do a one night stand hook up – but here are other options to go pure. I can’t say I agree with all of the advice in the book. I’m pretty sure neither of my boys would enjoy reading it.
But it is a great conversation. I’d recommend these resources to folks who are in the courtship community. To those who hold the highest restrictions of boundaries between boys and girls. I won’t praddle on here why I think focusing on the fact that a boy and a girl are alone together for 10 minutes in a room will accidently lead to sex. I can shop in a camera department and not accidently steal cameras, even though I REALLY want one. Maybe I should write a – how we date – post soon. Ha.
Dispite not enjoying the video – I did like the journal – Check It Out!!
